How would
you feel if you were a child living in the streets of Nairobi with no
place to go? What would you do? Where would you turn?
The problem of street children in Nairobi has reached alarming proportion.
Driven by poverty and the impact of HIV/AIDS, many of these children
end up in the streets without shelter, food or any form of basic rights.
Many AIDS orphans have nowhere to go. The ones who are lucky end up
in orphanages.
The impact of HIV/AIDS on these children is serious. Children from single
parent families are highly vulnerable to destitution. Once that parent
dies, the children are left on their own as immediate family members
rarely accept to become guardians. Such orphans have nowhere to go,
and those who are lucky end up in orphanages.
In Nairobi, Kenya, Lutheran World Relief is working with Peace Humanitarian
Christian Center International, an organization that focuses on improved
quality of life among orphaned children of the slums. The school enrollment
is over 500 day pupils. It is also home to 60 orphans living at the
center. Both boys and girls are learning skills to build their futures.
Without the help from PEHUCCI these children would not enjoy basic rights
such as food, clothing, shelter, health care and education. PEHUCCI
is seen as a lifeline to disadvantaged children in the area.
Through a small grant from LWR, the school was able to improve safety
and physical conditions at the orphanage. A fence around the property
was built and cement floors were installed for the classrooms and dormitories.
