Mauritania
Human Right promotion
Partners: ELCA and the Lutheran World Federation Deaptment for World Service
The
United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) is assisting the Mauritanian government
to set up a national action plan for human rights. To assist this, the
LWF Department for World Service is providing a staff person to liaise
between the government commission, the UN and other international agencies.
Human rights is a very sensitive issue in Mauritania. The international
stature of the LWF, which has been in Mauritania for many years now in
offering sustainable participatory development, has helped make possible
seminars and workshops, supervision of international experts, and participation
in coordination meetings.
Several human rights issues have been the object of workshops: economic
and social rights; civil, political and cultural rights; human rights’
education; women, children and vulnerable groups’ rights.
Once the Mauritanian government has officially adopted a human rights
protection and promotion intervention framework, LWF, which supports and
accompanies the entire process, will be in a good position to integrate
more formally into its program a fully elaborated and operational human
rights-based human development approach to other programs in the country.
Objectives:
- To contribute to the promotion of the culture of human rights in Mauritania
through capacity building in this matter.
- Presentation of adequate timely reports by the Mauritanian government.
- Creation of an inter-ministerial committee to write reports.
Peace Projects : Kenya,
Mauritana, Sudan,
and Tanzania.
