Kakuma Refugee Camp
Partners: ELCA and the Lutheran World Federation Department of World Service
The Lutheran World Federation was invited by the United Nations refugee
agency (UNHCR) in 1992 to help establish a refugee camp in northwest Kenya
in response to the influx of Sudanese refugees fleeing fighting in southern
Sudan. Though there is hope that a new agreement signed in September 2003
between the Sudanese government and rebels will bring long-sought peace,
meeting the daily needs of the more than 80,000 refugees in Kakuma Camp
continues.
In addition to providing basic food and non-food items, sanitation, and
shelter for the refugees, the reality of conflict remains real. The refugees
come from diverse backgrounds themselves, bringing with them historical
divisions. The refugees also find themselves interacting with the host
community, with tensions rising at times. As a result peace education
and conflict resolution has become a part of the program. Through this,
the people see the importance of peace throughout the whole world and
their role in bringing peace at all levels of society.
