Summaries of HUNGER PROJECTS in Africa
Working with LWR Partners

Mali—Katiena: Integrated Development

Partners: LWR and Association Malienne pour la Promotion du Sahel (AMAPROS)

Mali’s Katiena district’s irregular rainfall and increasing erosion have caused low agricultural production. As a result farming, cattle breeding, and fishing are not generating sufficient income to cover food, health, or schooling expenses. Within a 60 km radius there is only one public school, and the literacy rate in some villages is scarcely 15%. The rate is even lower among girls. In addition, the aridness of the region makes it difficult to access safe drinking water, resulting in diarrhea, parasites, and other water-borne illnesses.

GOAL: To improve the living conditions of the most vulnerable urban and rural communities by using information, education, and training to increase their capacity for self-sufficiency. This project provides support to the agricultural sector, increasing income and food productivity, and resulting in improved health. Training programs in literacy, management and technical areas, and Malian laws will improve awareness and empower the people.
LWR will assist with capacity building, project monitoring and management.

OBJECTIVES: LWR’s partner, AMAPROS will:

Agricultural productivity and access to food will increase due to available credit for buying agricultural equipment, and the creation of new grain banks.

The people of Katiena will develop a greater sense of empowerment and self-reliance in order to organize and advocate for themselves through better reading, management and technical skills, combined with awareness and an understanding of their legal rights.

Increased agricultural productivity, as well as creation of markets where produce can be sold will generate increased income

Increase agricultural productivity will result in better nutrition

Access to safe drinking water, as well as STI/AIDS prevention and excision education will lead to improved health and lower susceptibility to disease..

Total LWR Support: $71,250 through 2004.

Hunger Projects : Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Kenya, Liberia, Niger, Senegal, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo and Uganda.
