Care and Support Project
Partners:
LWR and Lutheran Media Ministry Uganda (LMMU)
Over the past twenty years, the HIV/AIDS pandemic has ravaged Uganda.
In the eastern and central districts of Kampala, Jinja and Iganga it is
estimated that 12% of the population is living with AIDS and 33% are affected
by the illness. While the Ugandan government has become more aggressive
in responding to the illness in recent years, the church community has
been slow to act. Recently, the Lutheran Church in Uganda has reassessed
its tradition of silence with regard to human sexuality and HIV/AIDS.
Even now, as it seeks to participate more actively in these arenas, though,
the church lacks the knowledge and organizational capacity to provide
counseling, education and advocacy for people living with AIDS.
GOAL: To
build the knowledge and capacity of 12 Lutheran congregations in the Kampala,
Jinja, and Iganga districts, empowering them to respond to AIDS-related
problems, provide education and outreach about HIV/AIDS and high risk
behavior, offer support, and advocate for the rights of people living
with AIDS.
OBJECTIVES:
LWRs partner, the Kiteredde Construction Institute will:
24 representatives of 12 congregations will be equipped
to provide HIV/AIDS education and prevention, support services, and advocacy
for their communities.
Congregations and local communities will understand and work to ensure
the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS as a result of educational theatre,
radio, and television programs, and create a code of conduct addressing
the rights of people living with AIDS.
Total LWR support: $59,828 through ????.
