UgandaEducating
AIDS Orphans in Kyotera
Partners:
LWR and Kiteredde Vocational Institute (KVI)
Southeastern Uganda’s Rakai District is a rural and economically
depressed area where more than 40% of households are living in poverty.
50,000 children have been orphaned as a result of civil strife and HIV/AIDS,
but relatives and government services are unable to bear the financial
burden of caring for these marginalized children. In addition, school
enrollment is low, as children are often drawn from school to care for
livestock. And, with the HIV/AIDS prevalence rate over 10%, there is a
rise in child-headed homes.
GOAL: To improve prospects for orphans through education in carpentry,
construction,
agriculture, tailoring, typing and cooking. This project will allow KVI
to work toward self-sufficiency and sustainability, consolidating its
management and administration, providing professional training for its
teachers, and diversifying funding.
OBJECTIVES:
LWRs partner, the Kiteredde Construction Institute will:
All KVI instructors will acquire professional qualifications,
thereby improving the overall training of the students and enabling KVI
to receive government subsidies.
The board of directors, PTA, and staff will be trained in organizational
management in order to develop clear guidelines for roles and responsibilities,
as well as adopting appropriate and effective policies.
KVI will meet at least 95% of its operational costs by intensifying
livestock and crop production, hiring out its services, and by seeking
corporate sponsorship.
There will be a 100% increase in the intake of girls.
600 youth will receive vocational training, thereby improving
their opportunities for employment or further training.
KCI
began its training programs in 1980 to improve prospects for war orphans
and to aid reconstruction in the wake of the 1979 civil war. The AIDS
epidemic is its greatest current challenge.
LWR Project Funding: $50,000 through 2004.
