TanzaniaTraining Health Educators
Partners:
ELCA and Evangelical Church In Tanzania.
DESCRIPTION:
Since
the Tanzanian health care system was privatized, it has been very difficult
for the ELCT to retain Tanzanian doctors in church hospitals. Salaries
are low and doctors can earn more in government hospitals or private
practice. A plan was devised whereby the ELCT can grow its own
doctors in the years 2001 through 2005. Two ELCT medical students will
enter Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center of Tumaini University each
year for a total of 10 medical students. Each will be selected through
a careful screening process, their medical education will be paid be
the program and they will sign an agreement to serve in an ELCT hospital
upon graduation.
OBJECTIVES:
To enable the Evangelical Lutheran church in Tanzania to train
their own members for service in ELCT hospitals.
To build up a critical mass of ELCT doctors.
To strengthen the ELCT Managed Health Care program.
