Nairobi, Kenya 2001
TWO OF 10 MILLION
Nairobis Children of God Home cares for 71 children
who are abandoned and HIV-positive. The Home began in 1992 when
a Catholic priest started taking in such children. All of them,
including the two pictured here, live in a family-like setting.
Acutely aware of problems beyond its wall, the Home also champions
community-based care for orphans plus efforts to stop the spread
of the virus that has now orphaned 10 million children in Africa.
A Lutheran World Relief project in Kenya is helping the Home and
similar organizations with strategy, childrens rights and
AIDS education materials.
Affordable anti-retroviral drugs would be a Godsend for the children
here. Soon, the Home expects to win government approval to import
generic versions of these from India for its childrenand win
wider availability later.
