Mali—HIV/AIDS Prevention Project in the Regions of Bankass and Koro

Although the level of HIV/AIDS infection is relatively low in Mali, a national survey reveals that the regions of Bankass and Koro have 3.2 percent and 4.5 percent rate of infection for men and women between the ages of 20-34. Another survey noted more than one-third of the population was not aware of the effectiveness of behavioral changes (such as abstinence, faithfulness to one partner, and safe-sex practices) in preventing HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD).

GOAL: ERAD has been working in the region since 1995. The organization accompanies local communities in the management of their development initiatives and supports them in their efforts to achieve autonomy.

The main goal of this project is to strengthen the capacity of community-based health associations to conduct awareness raising initiatives in HIV/AIDS prevention. Their work will focus on 36 villages in Bankass and Koro.

OBJECTIVES: LWR’s partner, ERAD, will:

• An estimated 26,504 people in 36 villages of Bankass and Koro will benefit from the project.

• Each village will have an established local health committee and, along with trained liaison agents, they will take over awareness-training activities.

• Three out of five people in the region will be aware of modes of transmission and prevention of HIV and STD, and there will be a marked increase in behavioral changes that prevent HIV and STD.

• Cases of new infections of STD are expected to go down in the covered villages by at least 10 percent.
