Mali - Amabougou: Health Promotion Project

Women of Adamabougou are presently unable to access maternal and child health services. In the region only 23 percent of the rural population have access to general health services, while only 35 percent of the pregnant women have access to prenatal and postnatal care. If a woman experiences pregnancy or postnatal complications she must journey to the nearest hospital 120 km away.

GOAL: To support the development and implementation of a Maternal and Child Health (MCH) clinic, which would provide a full range of pre and postnatal services to mothers and infants in the village of Adamabougou and five other villages as part of a larger community health promotion program. The direct beneficiaries will be 500 infants, 700 pregnant women and 300 men of the village of Adamabougou. An estimated 80 percent of pregnant and postnatal women in the target area will be using MCH services by the end of the project.

OBJECTIVES: LWR’s partner, AMAPROS will:

• Build a Maternal and Child Health Clinic (MCH).

• Provide and monitor pre and postnatal care through the recruitment of a professional midwife and training of four selected Community Health Agents (two women and two men).

• Provide health education and sessions on child nutrition, family planning and HIV/AIDS prevention.

• Build the capacity of local health association (ASACO) members to oversee the MCH clinic financially and administratively.

Total Project Support: $56,501 through 2003.
