LiberiaHIV/AIDS Training Workshops for Church Workers
in the Lutheran Church in Liberia Operational Areas.
Partners:
ELCA and the Lutheran Church in Liberia (LCL)
DESCRIPTION:
The
HIV/AIDS epidemic has taken root in Liberia. The first case was
discovered in 1986. To date, quoting the United States Embassy near
Monrovia, more than 300,000 people are carriers of the HIV virus.
This has reached alarming proportions that possess crucial leadership
challenges not only for the state, but the church as well.
Every sector of the nation must join in the effort to eliminate
this killer disease that is destroying the human race. One of the
best ways is by creating awareness in churches, especially through
the influence of the pulpits, youth groups, institutions and the
communities.
The LCL is joining in an HIV/AIDS awareness campaign by conducting
seminars in the parishes of the LCL, schools and the local communities.
It is against this background that the LCL is training pastors,
youth leaders and school administrators throughout Liberia. This
training program is paramount.
OBJECTIVES:
To train church workers in the LCL to help create awareness
of STD/HIV/AIDS and its control and prevention.
At the end of the training, participants will be able to:
-Discuss
the definition of STD including HIV/AIDS infection.
-Describe the current STD/HIV/AIDS situation in Liberia and the
world.
-Explain the cultural and human resources issues related to AIDS
awareness
and counseling.
-Discuss the roles and responsibilities of church workers in STD/HIV/AIDS
prevention, control, care and social settings.
-Demonstrate skills in discussing sensitive issues.
-Demonstrate communication and counseling skills.
Method of presentation will include discussion, lecture, case study
scenario, role play, group work, film show and demonstration.
The initial workshop was held in October 2001. Thereafter,
HIV/AIDS education and awareness will be conducted in the five districts
of the LCL for one year.
A total of 60 participants began the initial training program.
