Summaries of HIV/AIDS Projects in Africa
Working with LWR Partners

Kenya—HIV/AIDS Intervention and Community Empowerment Project

Partners: LWR and and the Association of People with AIDS in Kenya (TAPWAK)

In Kenya’s Ugunja Division, one of the nation’s poorest regions, a staggering 24% of the population is infected with HIV. Since 1990, HIV/AIDS has been the leading cause of death in the area. Those infected with the virus face social stigmas and discrimination, as well as inadequate medical facilities. The youth of Ugunja, who make up over 58% of the area’s population, have little awareness of HIV/AIDS. The pandemic has hit the agricultural sector, which employs nearly 80% of the work force, particularly hard, resulting in greater poverty, malnutrition, and food insecurity.

GOAL: To reduce the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Kenya, and to provide education and advocacy, as well as emotional, social, economic and medical support to those who are infected and affected by the disease. Specifically, TAPWAK will raise awareness in order to halt the spread of HIV, provide direct service through counseling services, two clinics and an orphan support program, and promote mutual support and empowerment among its members. TAPWAK also trains individuals to become counselors and educators.
LWR will assist in institutional capacity strengthening and in developing a stronger rights-based approach to advocacy work.

OBJECTIVES: LWR’s partner, AMREF will:

At least 5000 people with HIV/AIDS will receive counseling and nutritional advice.

Those served will establish vegetable gardens in order to better feed themselves.

TAPWAK will train community members to be empowered and effective lobbyers for affordable health care and drugs, as well as work to overcome the stigma of HIV/AIDS.

At least 5000 community members will acquire skills and knowledge to grow their own food. Excess produce will be sold to increase income.

Total LWR Support: $126,637 through 2004.
