Summaries
of HIV/AIDS Projects in Africa
Working with ELCA World Hunger Program Partners
EthiopiaHome Based Support to AIDS Orphans
Partners:
ELCA and Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus.
DESCRIPTION:
The
multifaceted impacts of HIV/AIDS in the community and the socio-economic
system have already become major threats in Ethiopia, as in many
other least developed and economically disadvantaged nations. One
of the major ill effects of HIV/AIDS is the death of young adults
resulting in a huge number of orphans with little or no resources.
AIDS orphans are currently estimated to be over 600,000 in Ethiopia.
Current estimates show that $365 is needed to support one orphan
for one year.
At the family level, the burden and stress on the extended family
system that tries to care for these orphans is increased. Many orphans
rely on the guardianship of elder grandparents, aunts and uncles.
There are many families headed by children as young as 10 years.
In a poor country like Ethiopia, where the capacity to provide services
for such children is nonexistent, the burden is immense. There are
a few NGOs and churches providing assistance to an extremely low
proportion of AIDS orphans, and these are located mainly in the
capital, Addis Ababa.
OBJECTIVE:
The
project will assist the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus,
North Ethiopia Area Work to establish home and community based support
to AIDS orphans in Dessie and Comoblcha town. The EECMY/NEAW believes
that orphaned children are best cared for within families rather
than in orphanages. It intends to assist designated guardians in
meeting the basic needs of the orphans including school, vocational
training and medical fees. It will assist the family in planning
for the future of the children and/or widow during the counseling
period in the form of permanency planning concerning wills and guardianship.
The project is also involved in the initiation of income generating
projects to assist the guardians of orphans and widows to achieve
and maintain their self-sufficiency.
