Lent 2001 marked the launch of Stand With Africa an ongoing
campaign of Lutheran World Relief, the ELCA World Hunger Program and
LCMS World Relief. The campaign supports African churches
and communities as they withstand HIV/AIDS, banish hunger and build
peace. It gives special emphasis to an often forgotten continent that
is a place of promise and progress, despite its problems.
WITHSTANDING AIDS
The first year of the campaign focuses on the HIV/AIDS crisis in Africa.
Stand with Africa supports programs such as HIV prevention education,
training HIV educators and working with AIDS orphans and widows so they
can take care of themselves.
BANISHING HUNGER
In addition to ongoing HIV/AIDS projects, working with people to help
them grow enough food to eat will be a priority of Stand With Africa
in the second year. Local agricultural projects that assure good nutrition
and producing enough surplus crops to sell are supported.
BUILDING PEACE
Many countries of Eastern and Southern Africa have been engaged in or
have experienced repercussions from war or major civil violence since
the mid-1970s. In 2003, Stand With Africa supports local projects of
conflict resolution and peace building while continuing its work on
HIV/AIDS and hunger projects.
